Re: Oni - No Game Sound

So you hear the Main Menu music, but when you start a game, there's no dialogue or sound effects?  Very odd....

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

there are some sounds, but not sure if its part of the game, in the very First level when Konoko jumps on a ledge and slides open a window, i can hear that sliding of window but after that there is a constant Machine noise going on, nothing else..

There is no combat sounds, no Speech sounds, no running sound

The gamefolder inside Oni is 345MB containing of 91 files and 15 Folders, can you confirm if it tallies?

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

I can't really confirm file counts because there are various minor files that may or may not be present in various Oni installations.  However I will say that a normal Oni installation is around 640MB uncompressed.  That being said, your startup.txt shows that all level files seem to be present.  If you can play every level, then it doesn't seem possible that you are missing specific game data such as sounds.  It's much more likely that the sounds are just not playing.  Someone else recently reported a similar problem on our Discord, and it was fixed when he rebooted his PC.  Have you tried rebooting and then running Oni before you launch any other apps?

If you want to confirm file sizes, here are the sizes of the level files and intro and outro movies in my Windows Oni's GDF.  These are not to be taken as authoritative, as there can be minor variations in the game data.  They'll at least tell you if you're in the right ballpark:

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

One more thing.  If you're sure that you have a proper retail version of Oni installed (which I'm not so sure about, based on your total data size), then you should try running Oni in windowed mode and see if all the sounds are playing.  A simple way to run in windowed mode is to use the run_wind.bat script that should be in the Oni/AE/ folder (if it's not there, copy it into AE/ from Oni/).  I have now witnessed my Mac dropping sounds in the same manner — lots of combat sounds and cutscene dialogue goes away — but it seemed to happen in full-screen and not in windowed mode.  You can also try forcing vsync on Oni when running it in full-screen mode and see if that helps with the sounds.  Just a theory.

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

Hi, Thanks for responding,

Rebooting has no effect as my config is way advanced for Oni. There is no difference in the File sizes either so i am still stumped as to why the sounds are not playing. i ll try the windowed mode and post result here.

Thanks once again

Edit: I changed the resolution of the game to 720x so it played in windowed mode as opposed to full screen resolution, the result still remains the same.. "No Sounds". however in the mods i have installed "New moves for konoko" by Delano762 and surprisingly i can hear those combat sounds...run_wind.bat has same issues..

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

To be clear, windowed mode isn't dependent on your resolution, it's dependent on Oni being run with the "-noswitch" command or on the Daodan DLL being configured to run Oni in windowed mode.  But after more testing, I can't get the sounds to drop on my Mac like they were dropping before.  I guess we have to consider this bug "still under investigation".

Also, it's not that your computer might not be good enough for Oni — I just seem to recall someone else finding that Oni ran better when it was the first app to run after startup.  One never knows how a modern system might throw off an old game.

P.S.: Delano's New Moves mod only adds one sound to the game, for the fwd+punch(JF) move with the electrical effect.

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

Yep, I understand.  If I can get my Mac to have this problem again, or someone else on Discord can reproduce it, I'll be able to troubleshoot a bit.  Until then, it's an unsolved mystery, sorry.

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

is it possible some data is missing from persist.dat? or its the .exe issue?

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

No, persist.dat only stores basic game settings like volume, game difficulty, the chosen resolution, and your progress in the game.  If your game data* really totals 600 MB or more, not the 345 MB you originally stated, then you should have all the sound data.

*Referring here to the data in a vanilla (untouched) Oni installation.  The AE folder tends to be much larger.

yea, Oni GameDataFolder is  (609MB, 91 Files, 15 Folders) and the Full AE folder is 778MB (this can vary based on whoever downloads whichever mods i guess, in my case i have only 2 mods, konoko new moves, and Muro HD textures)

Edit: the 345MB is the GameDataFolder in X:\Oni\AE

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

Hmm, that doesn't sound right at all.  The AE/ folder should always be at least twice as big as the vanilla Oni/ folder, because it's copying the vanilla data to AE/ as a base and then also creating a new GameDataFolder with that data + the mods you installed, plus the mods themselves occupy space separately in AE/AEInstaller/packages/.  Here's an idea of what I mean, with typical sizes for the folders in a new AE installation:

Oni (640 MB at just this level, or 1.34 GB total counting AE/)
└─AE (700 MB)
    ├─AEInstaller (340 MB)
    └─GameDataFolder (340 MB)

These are about the minimum sizes you should see for each level of the hierarchy, or else something is wrong.

yea it amounts to that only, The total file size of my Oni folder is 1.35 GB (1,45,99,20,896 bytes)

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

UPDATE: The sound is working absolutely fine.

recently i updated a few things on my system, old version of DX diag 9 which came prebundled with Tomb raider undercover and DOT net 4.5 framework. i am not sure which one exactly did the trick, but now i can hear all the chatter.

In case anyone still has problem hearing audio, try tweaking the speaker settings to left and right channels only instead of 5.1

Re: Oni - No Game Sound

That's good news, thanks for letting us know!  Maybe the .NET update fixed an issue the AEInstaller was having, since it uses .NET to run OniSplit, the tool that repacks the game data for the AE.  Or maybe it was the DX update that did the trick.  It might have even been the change in your audio settings, since Oni only knows about two sound channels.
