Hi!
I'm new here.
I have a serious problem with Oni. I don't know why, but everytime I play the game, it restarts my computer.
The timing is very random, it can happen after 30 minutes of gameplay, or after 5 minutes.
I use the OniforXP .exe file, and tried the Daodan dll, but still got the problem.
I use WinXP, and Oni.exe's compatibility is set to Win '98.
ok, some updates:
I've tried to upgrade the Radeon 9550's drivers, it didn't work, so reinstalled the old driver.
Then turned off the "Automatic restart" option in the control panel. Oni crashed, I saw a blue screen, computer hung up.

Does it happened in other program? It looks ... like . you should try the patch of oni for XP. a file "oni.exe"
Offline
Other programs don't restart the system, only Oni.
I already use the patched Oni.exe

I had the same problem about a year ago, but for all programs. The failure was a kink in the IDE-cable. But only in Oni? That's very strange indeed. Sounds more like a virus.
Btw, have you got a legal or a pirate copy of Oni? (I'm asking, because pirate copies can be corrupt.)
Offline
It's pirate copy, but installs fine. I never had any problems with it yet.
In hungary I couldn't find a place where I can buy Oni... nowhere.

Is there anything recurrent about the location (chapter, savepoint) where the problem occurs?
Also, can you confirm that the game not just blams but completely f##ks up your Windows?
Have you tried running in -noswitch mode? (e.g., edit the shortcut to run "Oni.exe -noswitch")
Behold the power of that which is yet unborn! For the swirling images that flow forth from the Chrysalis are only a shadow of the sleeper's true power.

It doesn't depend on the location. It can happen anywhere.
The game not just blams, it restarts the system. I turned off the Automatic Restart to see the Error Message.
But there was no error message, just a blue screen with some white pixels... and computer hung up instead of restarting, of course.
Now I'll try the noswitch mode, and report.
edit:
In -noswitch mode:
1024x768x32 Crashed
800x600x16 Crashed.
Any other suggestions?

I've googled for "program restarts computer randomly" a bit.
Some links:

Hope that helps.

AdamBast, I'd try out the demo if I were you.
At least you'll be certain the game content is OK.
As for -noswitch, I'd try using it with 640x480...
(by "Crashed" you mean that hanging screen?)
Just in case: you "just" try to play Oni, right?
No fancy DevMode stuff, hotkeying etc?

Well, thanks for the suggestions.
I'll try the demo.
By 'Crash' I mean that:
It restarts the machine, because 'automatic restart on system failure' is turned on. But if it would be disabled, it'd show up that blue screen with the random white characters and pixels.
I don't use DevMode, I just wanna play Oni.
My next post will be next week, because I don't have much time now. I keep on trying.

Ok, I checked the demo in 640x480.
It restarts too.
I also tried 2 hacked drivers.
The Omega drivers didn't install. The SoftMod drivers installed, but they restarted the Pc on boot...
So with that I couldn't get into Windows.
I'm starting to lose my mind.

I meant the latest drivers from your vid card's manufacturer...try them again, and if that doesn't work, try beta drivers (not hacked ones D: )
Also....deselect compatibility mode!
The daodan dll (or possilby the XP patch) will fix any compatibility issues x_x

"The daodan dll (or possilby the XP patch) will fix any compatibility issues"
I wouldn't be too sure about the "any". We're fixing some very specific stuff.
Don't bother with the "XP patch", though: the Daodan DLL covers that fix.
I don't think we ever saw anything like your problem.
For the record, please provide your PC's specs again.
Maybe there's something special about the hardware?

ok not any, but it has fixed it on any computer I have seen...
I still think it is a combination of the compatibility thing and broken drivers though...

How much RAM do you have?

System specs:
Asus P4V8X-X MoBo, Intel Celeron 2.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 2x80GB Maxtor, 2 DVD Writers, Sapphire Radeon 9550, C-Media CMI 8738 Sound card.
The Radeon doesn't work with the latest driver. With the latest Catalyst, after booting into Xp, the pc restarts.
Someone else had this problem too, and they solved it on a Hungarian forum. The solution is to use Catalyst 4.12.
With that, computer runs fine. Until I start Oni...
---
the RAM is only one stick, not two separate pieces, just to clear that up.
---
Yesterday I reinstalled WinXp...
It didn't help. Now I'm confused. I shouldn't have bought this video card. I'm sure that the Radeon causes the problem. Now I'm Googling for help, what can I do...?

I upgraded to the latest (beta) BIOS, latest Northbridge driver, Catalyst 7.1.
I was able to play for almost an hour. The problem is now that Oni restarts when I want to quit.
I press the key "Quit" and then "Yes" and comp restarts. Now the game works fine, no problems with that.

Should be a problem of your graphic driver.

Latest seems to be 8.1

I installed the 8.1 Catalyst, and turned off the automatic restart.
Oni crashed, but at least I got an error message.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
so I went to device manager, and see devices by IRQ:
maybe that is the problem? Should I use another PCI slot for the sound card?
the file mentioned in the error message is PARTCLS.SYS

Yeh it can also be the sound card. My oni just got unplayble with a driver that I installed in it. I needed reinstall the old audio driver.
Offline
Be sure you are using this driver:
http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/driverfiles/400.zip
But the sound card may be suspect...

JIIEEHAAAA
It is now solved.
The problems were:
Probably: the outdated BIOS, outdated Catalyst
Certainly: outdated northbridge driver, and Win XP has assigned the same IRQ's for the video and the sound card.
I can play Oni now!:D:D
Thanks for the suggestions(even if they were useless), YOU kept me trying. I couldn't have made it without you.
