There's something else you can look forward. An epilog of Oni in form of a grafic novel. It's titled "Wasteland Flowers".
Propably the release won't be anytime soon since it's Guido's and Alex' hobby project but it's definitive worth waiting.
The wiki page of it was recently updated so I guess Guido wanted us to know that there is progress.

You see Jamie rejected Mai and Muro for having a crysalis in them as it represents a mutation within them. Which said mutation could represent what Jamie went through when her leg was cut, turning her into a thin and wretched beast. She hid under the Ninja armor to keep her horrible appearance conealed. She saw them as a horrible representation as to what happened to her and couldn't bear to see their own children be infected by it. So she was bent on destroying Mai in order to rid her and her daughter of the contamination of the world.
First she herself first joined the Syndicate in order to get the Crysalis from her husband in order to survive the state she was in, however being meant only for Muro and Mai, the crysalis also worked on her as they were blood related. With this power she killed her former husband, as she could not have him finding out who she was nor could she forgive him for letting her go into the forest. She was insane, she was mad, she found joy in killing, especially the man whom she once loved. She became one of the Syndicate's top assasins, she was heavily valued. However she could not find herself to killing Muro, as he resembled the man whom she onced loved... however he was her son... she couldn't kill him just yet. Not until she killed off her own represantation in this world, Mai. Taking advantage of the mission she was given, she lead Konoko to a rooftop for an encounter. Mai could feel her inside her, she could feel this ninja... of course, her own mother would have a connection with her. Unfortunately she was killed by Mai, she proved to be to weak for the original user of the crysalis. And so came the end to a tale of a poor mother, and her poor fate.

As oxe161 shows, any explanation is plausible with enough work. It's really just a matter of what makes for the most interesting story. Personally, I don't like the idea of Mukade being Mai's mom or dad just because it feels too obvious and clichéd. It would actually be more shocking for the fans if it turned out that Mukade was just some guy in a ninja suit with a Chrysalis.

That sounds like Chrysalis, not very family-like...
Also, Jamie didn't get infected from Chrysalis, she got infected by cutting her leg on a plant in the contaminated zone. She was simply poisoned, then shot by James.

You see Mukade himself, or should I say itself isn't a man, nor woman, but a Hermaphrodite. You see it all begun with a man whom was beginning to have desires for males. He was a japanese male with knowledge of martial arts from his father and family. His father wanted him to marry a young woman, one that would bring honor to the family's tradition, he wanted a grandson capable of contuining the tradition of martial arts, but the man often rejected females, he did not know why. He liked men, that's all he knew, however homosexuality was seen as degrading and anyone who was gay would often be ridiculed or killed by others, homosexuality was no longer accepted like it was before.

Wanting to become a female he went to many doctors and such, however gender changing was seen as bad also and no doctor would do the task. Except the Syndicate's own twisted freaks. A doctor working for the Syndicate accepted the task, however being inexperienced he only changed everything except for the man's penis as it was considerably hard at the time since the act was dead. He was able to change his appearance to that of a female, a slim body, breasts, long hair, a clean face. The man was gorgeous, however he still had what made him a man, so he was not fully a female, nor male either since he had most of the body of a woman and the mindset of one. The operation wasn't all well though, it came at a price, he would have to work for the syndicate, as a prostitute. However the fact that he still had the eh... thing he could only pleasure men in two other places... anyway he was able to get what he wanted from men, it was finally there, the desire he wanted, however it wasn't all well. Some men would often beat him as some were violent, using his knowledge of martial arts he was able to defend himself from people, he still knew how to fight. This would go on for some years until he was summoned to do a special task for the new syndicate leader, along with other females to pleasure them.

He was brought to a compound. Muro and some other men whom he was doing business with came out from a room, he was presenting them a good time. Muro noticing the man's face and body decided that he would take that one for himself, he was smitten, attracted. They played around and stuff... yeah.. Muro pulled down his pants and noticed the male part he had... enraged he trashed the man. Despite his efforts on defending himself he was beaten. Muro being ashamed and angered ordered to have him killed. He was taken to a forest and beat, face trashed, arms scratched and bloodied up, breasts implants destroyed, his physical body now a horrible appearance. Enraged he attacked the ones that beat him, despite his injuries he killed some of them, Muro observing the scene from afar sent some men to retrieve him. He was a good weapon, the man had no life anymore, there was nothing he could do anymore but work for Muro, that.. or death. He became a well respected Ninja, and was a skilled fighter. With his skills he was chosen for a Crysalis implant along with Barabas. He was given an armor to conceal his scars and body that the crysalis produced. He worked for the Syndicate for years, until Mai killed him and blah blah blah. The End.
