Yes, although some people who tried the multiplayer say that it didn't perform well with more than 2 players, and that was on a LAN. It would have performed worse over the Internet, if it ever worked at all. The networking code was never really finished and Oni had to be released soon, so...

They should have released the game, and open sourced the network code, letting fans finish and add it into the game.

I guess Bungie wasen't really looking at the future, because in 1999 - 2000 online gaming wasen't that popular due to the limitations. If they had kept the multiplayer part people would had been able to play it now, since internet speeds etc. have taken a great step since then.

-.- It wasnt so obvious it hadnt pointed it out. Nice video. Why couldnt they extent the time of release? I mean if u were willing to work on the internet for a better gameplay sure ill wait for that game to come out later. Why must they release at a certain date? Cant they be flexible?

Because it had already been in development for a while, you can't just sit on your hands waiting for one feature to come through. To get MP working would have needed significant code changes.

Oni had been in development since around the summer of 1997. That's a long time for any game, although Bungie is known for not setting deadlines, and only releasing a game when it's good and done. What brought matters to a head was that they were being bought by MS to develop Halo for their new console. They couldn't put this off any longer, having signed the papers in the summer of 2000 and needing the cash. Since T2 already owned 19.9% of them, they traded the Oni and Myth IPs to get that percentage back so they could sell 100% to MS. So Oni was a casualty of Bungie's move to Redmond.

If they can't, we can.

Wow... so much has changed since those early versions.... It's almost like an entirely different game.
The artist must bow to the monster of his own imagination. Promoting the IRC and stuff for the RP: Rules Dice Map and RP

The development of the game was redirected in some ways in mid-1999 when Hardy LeBel replaced Brent Pease as Project Lead. They also had to make some changes for the sake of performance.

that's really sad that they rushed it for halo. chances are very small they are gonna make an ONI 2.
maybe the fans of ONI could create something awesome like an online mode. I don't know if it's possible

Flatline is the current multiplayer project, but it seems like it's long time since some progress was made?

The issue was that the daodan (which flatline uses as a base) was built for a compiler that I don't like. I've just now (like yesterday...) got it to work on my own compiler, so progress should continue as soon as I work out all the kinks (could take a while...).
