Dear forum members! who knows games like oni?
Offline
Well, it depends on what parts of Oni you are looking for in a game. Female protagonist? Just gunplay, or great melee too? A sci-fi setting? Smooth controls?
Action game with heroine as main character & with gunplay = Tomb Raider, Heavy Metal FAKK2, Mirror's Edge, etc.
Game with deep melee combat = Lugaru & Overgrowth
Action game with great fighting controls = Zone of the Enders, Viewtiful Joe, etc., etc., etc., etc.
But if you combine the ingredients:
Game with a heroine, deep melee, gunplay, & sci-fi setting = GUNNM: Martian Memories (console game, so probably doesn't control great) (also only available in Japanese)
Game with a heroine, great controls, deep melee, gunplay & a sci-fi setting = ...
So, as far as I know, no games like Oni

I'll have to add a game to that list:
Great controls, deep melee and gunplay = Devil May Cry 3/4. If you're new to the series, play 4 first =p

I am looking for @real@ fiststriking, like taking opponents gun by swirling hand, ninja like sorties, when you silently penetrate, and kill one foe after another and may be I search for gun shooter like this, but guns in oni are almost ordinary, except enemy may take your gun, or take empty gun from floor push bullets or cell and spit fire to you. It is @realy@ @@G R E A T@@ game!

Ivanhoe: try Matrix:Path of Neo
or Dynamite Cop. It is for Dreamcast or MAME.
BTW guys, what do you say about GTA IV close combat system? I think if it was spiced up by a few thigs, it would be finally thing I am looking for. But in current state not.
Loser
P.S.: Mengjun, Devil May Cry is great fun, but combat is very simplified in order to present Dante/Nero as "ultracool" guys. I played it and it gets a bit boring in a while. Unlike Oni there is no challenge from common grunts, they are here just to be killed. But bosses are fun, yes, bosses are the best part of DMC without doubt.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a good choice. Granted, you only get one weapon, but your Force powers really make up for it. And what's more fun than punting a room full of Jawas?
Never insult seven people when you only have a six-shooter.

I prefer san andreas' combat system better. Especially getting on top of a car and punching till it explodes

Max Payne is pretty good. Is pretty much like oni but without the fighting.

Except that Oni isn't a crap game not worth the disc it was burned on.

I'd say the game with the most resemblance to Oni is "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" for PS2. Probably because (if the rumors I heard are true) Bungie wanted to make an Ghost in the Shell game back then, but they didn't get the rights, so they took the basics of GitS and added their own ideas to make a game similiar to GitS.
If the rumor isn't true then they at least were inspired alot by GitS. And don't forget that there are special thanks to Masamune Shirow (creator of GitS) in the Oni credits.

Found it through IGF 2009:
Zeno clash
http://www.zenoclash.com/
Features:
First-person
Hand to hand melee combat (block/evade/combo)
Melee & ranged weapons
Source Engine
Purchase & download via steam
No demo though. Would have been perfect for me if it's 3rd person perspective instead of 1st...from the gameplay video things are too disorientating.
EDIT: oops, should have posted this in Ivanhoe's topic...didn't see it until I've posted...my bad.

Done.
Ok, how about this: new Batman game. Looks pretty awesome. Stealth, some (probably pretty basic) melee, and cool gadgets. Not exactly Oni, but still sweet.

Here's one game that I really like, and maybe not entirely like Oni (for example, no guns, no stealth), but should be very fun to play: Clover Studio's God Hand (PS2 exclusive).
+ Wonderful parody of fighting games in general, doesn't take itself seriously.
+ Fully costumizable (yes, *fully*!) move set, which over 100 moves to choose from.
+ Good for if you like a challenge.
+ Dynamic difficulty.

Looks pretty fun. It has the exact same Metascore as Oni, btw

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
pure melee combat, be sure to watch the uncaged trailer and to quote:"Finally a movie game that doesn't suck."

It does look fun -- although I see that there are no actual reviews for it yet, which is odd given that it's only a month away.

so its not exactly like oni, (there's no hand-to-hand combat, as far as i can tell)
but it looks interesting enough to mention, i think:

i've only just come across it, so i dont really know anything about it, though...
I intentionally spell dang, dange, FYI.

The Oni-standard thing I'd like to see in another game is the melee combat system. The controls are fluid and intuitive and the fighting is varied and balanced. I have yet to see that in another game. Also I don't think just plain fighting games like Mortal Kombat or whatever could measure up; I think a huge part of the Oni charm is the unbelievably badass combat system in a real-time continuous world.
If we don't change the direction we're going, we'll likely end up where we're headed.

There aren't many games like Oni. They only make shooter games that just pick a gun and then "pang" "pang" "pang" nothing more, they don't care about hand-to-hand combat or melee tactics, which made me feel disappointed.

The closest game I can think of to match the combat style of Oni was/is the dead to rights series. It has multiple styles of gun combat, hand to hand fighting with a deep collection of grabs and counters, and its got a dog you can use to attack heh.
I think what makes Oni so unique was the theme bungie decided encase this world in. Other than the Ghost in the Shell PS2 game (which is pretty good btw) there hasn't been any neo/cyberpunk themed games with an anime twist. Although Oni is obviously inspired by Ghost in the Shell, its still a game that has yet to be copied or recreated correctly by anyone which is why I think so many people still are drawn to it even now.

completely agreed with you.
it's not the story, not even the world they created, but the combat system and the amazing actions Oni could do that shocked me and drew me to the game.
there's nothing like it. however, if anyone want a good fighting adventure game like oni, blade of darkness is not a bad choice. although the control took a bit used to...
