Oni v1.2.1 (MAC) NEED TO SELECT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY

I'm running a Mac OS X El Capitan, and I've downloaded pretty much every version of Oni out there. The newest, and supposedly functioning version of Oni (v1.2.1) says "Alert  You need to select the installation directory for Oni" whenever I try to play it.

What does that mean? How do I run the game?

It'd be much appreciated if someone could help me, because this is getting frustrating...
Thanks!

Hmm, that was an old, unwanted feature that seems to have resurfaced.  It's asking for you to locate the directory that has the GameDataFolder that you want to serve as the active source of game data.  Try locating and opening the Oni folder and hitting OK.

Any idea where that folder might be? I've looked within Oni's package contents, and it wasn't there... I am unsure where to look.

Re: Oni v1.2.1 (MAC) NEED TO SELECT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY

The GameDataFolder is at the first level within an Oni installation: http://wiki.oni2.net/Oni_%28folder%29.  Just in case it's not clear, the 1.2.1 app is just that, the game app, so you have to have the game already installed from disc before it will work.

Ah, I see. I don't have a copy of the game unfortunately... Aside from the Playstation version.

Okay, so that was the issue smile  The game isn't sold firsthand anymore, but there's always secondhand copies out there.  I see a bunch on Amazon, for instance.

Re: Oni v1.2.1 (MAC) NEED TO SELECT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY

I'm not sure if this counts as "illegal content" (forgive me Iritscen if it does) but I believe certain abandonware websites may distribute it. I'd only go down this route if you (a) can't find a copy, (b) the seller's charging an arm & a leg for it ($60+).

Frankly, since abandonware is not a legal concept, those are really just warez sites that only pirate older games.  Secondhand copies of Oni should only be several dollars or else you're getting overcharged.

Do the original copies come specifically for PC or do they also function on Macintosh platforms?

Re: Oni v1.2.1 (MAC) NEED TO SELECT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY

Ok... I'm finding almost no potential sellers... The ones I do find are charging like 59$. I am not willing to pay that much for a game over a decade old.

I might even be willing to go to more extreme measures... Any suggestions without being too illegal? Might consider abandonware.

Re: Oni v1.2.1 (MAC) NEED TO SELECT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY

Make sure you're not looking at the "new" price if you're on Amazon, but rather at where the "used" prices start from.  That being said, now that I look more closely, I don't see any definite Mac copies for sale on Amazon, but you could check on eBay or other sites (I see some on eBay).

I can't make any suggestions about where else to get Oni because, as I said, abandonware is not legal, and we have a strict rule about not discussing warez on the forum.

To answer your previous question, Oni was sold in two separate versions, one only for Windows, and the other only for Mac, so if you see any "Win/Mac" listings, the seller is confused and is probably selling a Windows version.  The game data is not compatible between the platforms, so you can't just pair the Windows game data with the Mac app.

It would technically be possible to convert the Windows game data to the Mac format, but I've never heard of anyone attempting to comprehensively change the platform of the game data like that (that being said, mods are distributed in a bi-platform format and compiled for the current OS on the fly, so we do this kind of thing all the time on a smaller scale).  But it would probably be more efficient to just buy the Windows version, if no Mac version is available, and play it through Wine.

Re: Oni v1.2.1 (MAC) NEED TO SELECT INSTALLATION DIRECTORY

I read that there's a lot of controversy around abandonware & it's legality's in a grey murky area with the law at the moment (though it's officially considered illegal by us copyright laws). That being said it's not a very good idea to talk about it a lot in these threads. Some sites have been shutdown just for referencing it.

Alright. Next time I'll be a little more cautious when mentioning it. Thanks for the insight.
