Oni was developed by Rockstar Toronto for the PlayStation 2 version. I don't believe there's any difference between each port.

The game was rushed already. It was dumped for pretty much every platform. We're just lucky that the PC version came with the best results.

Although I haven't played the PS2 Oni, I know that Hardy Lebel, the project lead, was not fond of the port.  As TOCS said, the game was rushed -- but also, the PS2 had technical limitations.  Keep in mind that the character models and level models in Oni are actually pretty detailed for 2001.  So the PS2 had trouble keeping all of that in memory.  Also, it's hard to adapt a mouse-oriented game like Oni for any console.

If some kind of targeting system had been added for the PS2 version, it would've been way better. You feel naked without a mouse in these kind of games.

Ah, I see.  It's strange, because Oni has aiming assist even on Mac/Win, it's just very subtle.  You'd think they could have just turned up the assist for PS2.

They could have just added a targeting system, similar to what we see in the Grand Theft Auto series, on the consoles. Though the system probably would've needed a few tweaks to correct prediction, when using guns.

Without the Oni engine, GTA would still be 2D.

Re: Rockstar Games, the company has developed this game different?

I thought the auto-aiming thingy in the PC version was actually an adaptation of the PS2 version. Made sense. You're saying the PS2 version doesn't even have auto-aim?
Doesn't that make the game pretty damn irritating?

It does have auto-aim like the PC version.

Re: Rockstar Games, the company has developed this game different?

Although I haven't tried the PS2 version, I imagine that if they didn't turn up the auto-aim, it's probably not much help when playing with a console controller, maybe barely even noticeable.  I guess a lock-on system might have been a good idea for the port.

I have both versions, really. Although I like the PS2 version and it held me over 'till I got my new PC CD, it didn't completely fill the void. So yeah, I like the PC version better.

Re: Rockstar Games, the company has developed this game different?

The ps2 version is what i had for a while, so i have good memories with it. But the load times were absolutely terrible and the controls were very awkward. (L1 and L2 for jumping and rolling was my most hated part of it, plus the camera controls were a bitch)
